Supporting the Research on Tatev Monastery, Its Surrounding Historical Areas, and Settlements, to Include Them in the UNESCO World Heritage List
About the program
In March 2024, The Amaryan Charitable Foundation supported a research project to include Tatev Monastery, surrounding historical sites, and settlements in the UNESCO World Heritage list. This project is being conducted with the support of the 301 Land of Wisdom Foundation.
The project is led by architect-restorer Narine Tyutcheva, founder of Re-Shkola Armenia. The project involves historians, anthropologists, sociologists, culturologists, archaeologists, speleologists, restoration architects, and urbanists from Armenia, Russia, and France.
The project’s objective is to define and formulate the value characteristics of the Tatev Monastery and the adjacent historical areas and settlements: Old Khot, Old Halidzor, Old Harjis, and Old Shinuhayr. Additionally, the project aims to delimit the areas of the World Heritage Site, develop a comprehensive roadmap, and prepare a preliminary site assessment for nomination and documentation for the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The support from the Amaryan Charitable Foundation has been directed towards funding comprehensive research conducted to prepare documentation for nominating these important historical and cultural areas for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Project Status
The project is currently ongoing. The multi-disciplinary study evaluating the Tatev and Tatev Monastery Complexes for UNESCO World Heritage Site nomination has been successfully completed. Building on this comprehensive research, the preparation of a nomination dossier is currently underway, marking a significant step forward in the process of securing international recognition for this important cultural landmark.
